Alloa
Tower
Clackmannanshire,
Scotland
There
may have been a tower as early as 1223, but the present structure
was built considerably later. The property was conferred on
Sir Robert Erskine, Great Chamberlain of Scotland, by David
Second in 1360, and has remained with that great family, Earl
of Mars, ever since being created Earl of Mar in 1565. The family
were ever the trusted friends of the Stewart kings, and being
Hereditary Keepers of Stirling Castle nearby, were apt to be
the custodian of the young princes in troubled days. James Sixth
spent much time at Alloa Tower as a child, Johnny Mar being
his closest companion.
