Brodick
Castle
Situated
on the Island of Arran, Brodick Castle was the seat of Dukes of
Hamilton, built 13th century with later additions. Interior features
fine plaster ceilings, furniture, porcelain and paintings. Grounds
include 1710 formal garden, Victorian rose garden, and nature
trail. It was the seat of the Dukes of Hamilton and latterly the
Duke of Montrose until 1958 when it passed to the National Trust.
Built on the site of a Viking stronghold, the castle dates in
parts from the 13th century. The castle was sacked by the English
three times. The last occupation being at the command of Oliver
Cromwell in the mid 17th century and ended when the garrison was
massacred by the islanders.
